Virgil Abloh Canary Yellow Website Redesign

Redesign and optimization of a corporate intranet to enhance usability, improve internal communication, and boost employee engagement. The project aimed to create a more interactive and user-friendly platform for employees to access company resources and collaborate effectively.

Challenge

The original Canary Yellow website lacked an intuitive layout, making it difficult for users to navigate Virgil Abloh’s extensive body of work across fashion, design, projects, interviews, and lectures. Users struggled to explore content efficiently, as the site lacked a clear structure and accessibility features. The challenge was to redesign the website to simplify navigation, improve accessibility, and create a visually engaging platform that reflects Abloh’s visionary style.

Results

The redesigned website was well-received, with users finding it intuitive, engaging, and reflective of Virgil Abloh’s creative approach. The category-based structure significantly improved navigation, allowing users to explore content effortlessly. Incorporating interactive elements like keyboard shortcuts made the site more accessible and user-friendly, enhancing engagement with Abloh’s legacy.

Process

User Research & Pain Points – Conducted secondary research to understand how art and fashion enthusiasts engage with digital archives.

Sitemap & Information Architecture – Organized content into five structured categories to make navigation intuitive and accessible.

Wireframing & Prototyping – Designed low-fidelity and digital wireframes, focusing on keyboard navigation, category pages, and interactive exploration.

Usability Testing & Iteration – Implemented arrow-key navigation and a spacebar shortcut based on user feedback to enhance the browsing experience.

Accessibility Considerations – Applied high-contrast typography, clean layouts, and cognitive load reduction techniques to make the site usable for a diverse audience.

Conclusion

This project deepened my understanding of balancing creative storytelling with functional design, ensuring users can explore complex archives with ease. Through usability testing and iterative improvements, I refined key interactions, demonstrating how small adjustments—such as enlarging navigation arrows and adding progress indicators—can enhance the user experience. Future improvements include introducing multimedia content, a timeline feature for Abloh’s career milestones, and expanded usability testing to reach a broader audience.
